This paper examines the effect that student loan debt of parents affect their decision to use education funding options such as a 529 college savings plan and or coverdell ESAs. The result shows that parents who still have outstanding student debt are significantly less likely to save in tax advantage accounts than those that do not have student loan debt. We find no different between parents, student or not, when it comes to the decision to accumulate loans on their children's behalf.
