A key question that needs to be answered by someone seeking to make provision for their retirement is simply How much will I need in retirement? The New Zealand Retirement Expenditure Guidelines have been published annually since 2012 to assist in answering this question. This paper reports on the development of the Guidelines, how they may be used and what they tell us about the living standards of New Zealanders in retirement.
