Only 29% of households with a child under 18 reported that saving for college costs was a goal.  In order to provide more insights into why this proportion is so low, this research uses a variable in the SCF, whether there are expected expenses for education in the next five to 10 years, among households with at least one child age 13 to 17.  In this group, 67% reported expecting to have an expense related to education, and this was strongly related to education of the parents and other characteristics.
